Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by the mother, her grandmother as well as her godparents. Her father was absent from her family. As a young child, Ford battled anxious disorders, obsessive/compulsive and was afflicted through word-related associations. Ford became interested in the acting profession during her teen years, and was a part of the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of days, she concluded that the school was not right for her. Ford rather than applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and getting a spot after her third try, applied and won acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford was not able to graduate in 1993. However, in 1991, Ford had made her first appearance on TV in an episode of Surgical Spirit. At that moment, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Her regular work in theatre has led to her joining The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. However, Tate quickly began gaining attention for her stand-up comic that she incorporated into her show in 1996.
